Vent less gas fireplaces are a wonderful solution for those who want to have a fireplace but have limitations. The first thing that must be determined though is if the state you reside in allows these types of fireplaces. States vary and some will allow it whereas others do not.
The general concern is the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The manufacturers of these units have addressed this problem by installing a oxygen sensor with the unit that will automatically cut the gas supply off if the levels are not within the safe range.
A vent less gas fireplace is the perfect answer for those that do not have the proper chimney that is required by other fireplaces that require venting. Gas lines bring the gas to the unit. You also need to consider the era of atmosphere that your fireplace must fit into . This is dependant on the rest of the décor in the room. Keep it versatile though it case in the future you decide to change the time period décor of the room. Materials and colors are another factor that you will want to consider as well. Again, it would be wise to go with something neutral.
Vent free gas fireplace capabilities are producing high heat, and in some cases, you may find that you get a build up of moisture in the room so this is another reason that you want to be sure you are getting the right size for the room. Professionals are required for installation. Gas is the fuel used so it requires licensed gas technicians. If you have concerns as to the safety of these units discuss this with the manufacturers within your state. You must obtain permission for these particular fireplaces in the area where you live. If not you may have to seek out other alternatives. There are many other types on the market and if it is your true desire to have a fireplace then there should be nothing stopping you.
