A stone fireplace has to be way up on” the I want” list when it comes to deciding on the right fireplace. Some people call them rock and others call them stone. To be technical about it simply means that the stones are a smaller version of the rock and most often more versatile in shape.
There really is something regal and elegant about the stone fireplace. One of the impressive features about this type is their versatility to be able to fit into any type of style and compliment any décor from antique, Victorian and even ultra modern.
For individuals who love uniqueness and one of kind items, then the stone fireplace is perfect. Being as no two, stones are identical then using this, as the medium means no two stone fireplaces will be identical.
Although it is unlikely that you will want to alter the shape of the natural stones, you can be highly creative with them. Often one forgets about the mantle itself and opts for the typical wooden ones that being part of the natural elements blends in will with the rock. If you want to go to the extra bit of work and expense then you may really want to consider slate as the material for your mantle.
The real advantage to a stone fireplace is being able to mix and match the materials of nature. When one does this in their designing of their unit, they make it all that much more natural.
We mentioned earlier about stone fireplaces fitting into almost any décor. To do this and be successful depends on how you blend them in with the rest of the fireplace such as the firebox, insert and opening for example. If you think, they will not be compatible for the ultra modern décor then just look at some of the new office buildings. They are no doubt ultra modern and many of them now have an extremely attractive stone made fireplace. Again, it is how you use the stone and deciding whether to make stone the primary material or use it as accents.
When talking about stone you may feel that you do not want such a heavy material and if this is the case then you can opt for natural stone or sometimes called thin stone. A veneer that is lightweight yet versatile but durable. It fits nicely into a restricted budget as well as it is easy to work with. This has a direct advantage over stone. There is really a lot of room for choice as it comes in a variety of colors and textures.
A stone fireplace design that is of natural stone really does have many advantages but in the end, it comes down to the preference of the new stone fireplace recipient. Like anything, there are disadvantages to the natural stone in that it is more vulnerable to scratching and chipping. It is a matter of weighing out the disadvantages and advantages of both real stone and natural stone and picking what is best for you.
