Rock Fireplace Designs |
Rock fireplace designs bring to mind many different versions to people when asked about them. Some will refer to them as stone while others call them rock. In simplified terms, stones are a smaller version of rock in size. Therefore, if you are contemplating putting in a rock fireplace then you are considering a large stature.
Rocks go as far back as history itself being as they are part of nature. Since the invention of fire, they have acted as crude forms of fireplaces. They have never lost their appeal or awe when used in this form. When used properly in fireplace design they will usually fit into almost any décor whether it is rustic or ultra modern. It takes a bit more creativity to utilize them in the various ways mostly because they are not uniform in shape.
The choice of rock will be dependant on what you want the finished fireplace project to look like. If you decide that you are going for the real thing do not be surprised to find out that rocks are not cheap. They will last a lifetime however if your fireplace is constructed properly. To add to the expense is the fact that they are quite large and cumbersome to work with being as size and the proper cuts taking some finding.
If you want to cheat a little then you can go for fake rock. Most often, it is only discernable by its weight. Although they are light in weight when used in combinations such as in a fireplace, they are quite sturdy.
Once you have decided that it is going to be a rock fireplace then you have to consider size and style as well. Naturally, to keep things in proportion if you are using large rocks then the fireplace will have to be large. You can opt for smaller rocks if your space is somewhat limited. You are now going to have to come up with a design. This is going to depend on the overall décor an atmosphere of the room where you are putting your fireplace. In some styles such as rustic, for example you can use predominantly all rock, whereas in ultra modern you may want to consider using rock as accent pieces only.
The next decision to make is you going to build the rock fireplace yourself or have professionals do it? Of course, it will be more expensive to have it built but there are things that you must consider and in the end, it may in fact be the cheaper way to go. No matter which way you go, you are most likely going to have to purchase your rock unless you have the means to find and collect your own. This in itself could be a daunting task.
Any rock fireplace design must adhere to strict fire codes and safety rules. If you construct your own and do not comply with the rules, then you may have to tear it down. This could be a phenomenal job especially if it is completed. This is where using a professional may end up being cheaper after all.
