Outdoor Fireplace Designs |
Outdoor fireplace designs often are forgotten because most people when considering designing a fireplace they focus on the indoors. Yet there are many wonderful and exciting things you can accomplish outdoor when planning to include a fireplace into your décor.
The outdoor fireplaces have some things in common with the indoor fireplace planning. Just because it will be outdoors does not mean that you want to put it anywhere. You want it to compliment the overall landscape and design. If you do not have very flat ground that does not limit you from building a spectacular one right into the slope itself. The first decision though is what your expectations of it are. Are you going to be barbecuing with it, or is it just going to become a place to roast a few marshmallows and a place to sit under the stars.
You may want to keep in mind that it is going to serve a cooking function then you may want it built closer to the deck where it will be more convenient.
Once you have decided on how functional your outdoor fireplace is going to be you will need to decide its power source. Is it going to be strictly wood burning, or is it going to be natural gas or propane? This too will be a factor.
Just like, you have to consider your décor when planning an indoor fireplace the same applies to your outdoors. If you tend to have formal gardens and ultra modern patio furniture then you may want to keep towards the modern style fireplaces. On the other hand, if you have an English garden and ponds or waterfalls then the rustic look may be more to your liking.
Although because it is going to be located outdoors you may think, that size is not going to be a factor. Actually, it is very important. If you have a small backyard and a huge stone fireplace not only is not going to be practical it will look way out of place. So keep the size of your fireplace in proportion to your space. If you do this then you will get far more enjoyment from it. If you have built a small-scale fireplace then the possibility exists of being able to move it whereas this will not be likely with a bigger style.
Your style is going to dictate your choice of materials as well. Another thing you will have to consider is if you are going to build your outdoor fireplace yourself. Perhaps you are you going to hire landscapers or contractors to do it for you. Either way you are going to want to have a plan that you have approved. It is ok to give a builder some lea way on design but if you do not see it first on paper, you may end up disappointed.
The outdoor fireplace design must also consider safety as well. You do not want it situated near buildings or trees that could catch on fire. In addition, you do not want it in high traffic areas for safety purposes.
