Gas fireplace inserts can be a very economical way to convert an old existing fireplace into a warm and inviting part of your home. Many people have old useless fireplaces that are just a nuisance to them and for whatever reason they just do not use them. They do not realize that they can become a gas fireplace through conversion.
To give you a general understanding of how these inserts work just think of them as a camouflaged gas fueled heater with a circulating fan. There are two types of gas that are capable of powering this type of insert and that is natural gas or propane. In order to have a natural gas then there must be gas lines available in your area. Otherwise, your only other option for gas would be propane.
There are two main reasons for wanting a fireplace, one is as an additional heat source, and the other for esthetic purposes, mind you there is nothing to say you cannot have both.
The inserts use venting in the original fireplaces through the existing chimney. They are a metal firebox that is the heat conductor and holds the decorative five logs. The mix of air and gas gives that natural fire glow that one sees in gas fireplaces. In addition, a silent fan distributes the heat into the room. All these combinations make for the perfect fireplace that is hard to distinguish from the actual wood burning ones.
If you are not converting, an old fireplace that does not mean you cannot have an entirely new fireplace all-inclusive with the hearth and mantle. Often people feel that if they do not have an existing chimney then the fireplace option is out on the other hand you can have direct vents. These allow almost anyone to be able to enjoy one of the many gas fireplaces on the market today. The direct vents require no chimney and vent out through the wall. This opens up endless possibilities to having a fireplace such as the gas ones located on any outside wall.
You will find a great choice in the fire inserts. Naturally, you are going to want to choose one that fits in with the overall appearance of the existing fireplace dependant of course if that is the route you are taking. They come in various styles, materials, and of course color.
The same applies if you are buying a brand new unit, you will have many insert options. Your choice here should match with the atmosphere of your home. In addition, it should be compatible with the overall size of the fireplace.
Gas fireplace inserts have brought the fireplace industry to the point where they can just about accommodate anyone with a desire to have a fireplace within their home. It is the affordable way to supplement heating and to be able to curl up in a cozy atmosphere with a good book.
