Fireplace doors have many purposes although several people feel they are just decorative. To begin with yes, they are decorative when the fireplace is not in use. When the fire is burning is when the doors prove their real purpose unless of course it is an artificial fireplace. Being as the doors do serve a decorative function it is important to give them some thought when you are designing your fireplace. Improper doors can really downgrade the overall appearance of the fireplace.
If you consider the proper name of the glass doors as that of glass door fire screen it tells, you right there the primary purpose of the doors. They act as a fire screen. The alternative to these are the mesh screens that you will often see with the wood burning type fireplaces.
Naturally, with the doors open you are going to feel a bigger amount of heat. There is nothing to say that you must keep your doors closed all the time. One thing you must remember though is when the doors are open you have to use the mesh screen to prevent sparks. When the doors are closed, the heat is radiated through the special heat resistant glass that these doors are made from. One favorable function of glass doors is the ability to close them when the fireplace is not in use. Not only does it prevent neatness to the fireplace it prevents heat loss from going up the chimney.
Now that we have talked about some of the main functions of the fireplace doors, you can consider the vast amount of styles that are available. Where this can be a fun task, it can also get a little overwhelming as well, trying to decide which is best.
You will find that you may be able to choose between a single door and double doors. Usually the manufacturer will recommend the proper thickness. You also want to consider how easy they will be to clean. This is not much of a problem with the artificial type fireplaces but the real burning fireplaces can create quite a buildup on the glass. There are some styles of doors that will lift right off for easy cleaning.
Often you can purchase pre made standard doors if you have a standard type fireplace. In the event you have a specifically designed fireplace, you may have to have your doors custom made. The supplier may be able to give you some suggestions but you will have to know the size. You may have some ideas of your own that you can present to him and he will tell you if it is feasible or not.
The cost of fireplace doors is dependant on the style, thickness of glass and design just to name a few of the factors. Remember that although there are some fancy looking doors if you have to clean them then you are not going to be happy with a lot of intricate design. The other thing you want to bear in mind as well is you do not want the doors to overpower the magnificent show of a burning fireplace.
